HBO has officially confirmed the first wave of casting for its highly anticipated “Harry Potter” television series, and the wizarding world is already buzzing with excitement.
Leading the Hogwarts Faculty:
- John Lithgow (The Crown, Conclave) will take on the iconic role of Albus Dumbledore.
- Janet McTeer (Tumbleweeds, The White Queen) is cast as the sharp and steadfast Minerva McGonagall.
- Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, Gangs of London) steps into the mysterious role of Severus Snape.
- Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) will portray the lovable half-giant Rubeus Hagrid.
Previously, reports hinted that these actors were in talks for the roles — now, their involvement is official.
Additional Recurring Cast:
- Luke Thallon (Leopoldstadt, Patriots) joins as Quirinus Quirrell, a key character from the first book.
- Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show, Harry & Paul) will appear as Argus Filch, Hogwarts’ famously grumpy caretaker.

What’s Next?
These are the first confirmed names attached to the project, but fans are eagerly awaiting news about the casting of the series’ central trio — Harry, Ron, and Hermione. HBO held an open casting call in the fall of 2024, receiving over 30,000 submissions from aspiring young wizards and witches. Production is expected to begin this summer.

According to HBO, the series will be a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s globally cherished book series. Each season is set to delve deeply into the magical world, offering new and existing fans a fresh and detailed exploration of the Harry Potter universe.
